Austin Airbrush Tanning

FAQ's

If you’re a newbie to sunless tanning, we’ve got the answers to all your questions right here! Learn everything from how airbrush tanning works to whether or not you can spray tan while pregnant.

How does airbrush tanning work?

The active ingredient in virtually all sunless tanning formulas is DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a carbohydrate (monosaccharide sugar) compound approved by the FDA for use in externally applied airbrush tanning solutions. DHA is often derived from a vegetable source like beets or sugar cane. When DHA is applied to the skin, it causes a harmless chemical reaction with the existing amino acids in the skin to produce a airbrush tan, much like the sun does, but without UVA and UVB damage. The tanning solution is manually airbrushed in a fine mist all over the body or desired areas. The process will take about 15-20 minutes including drying time.  It is safe when only applied to the outside of the skin and not inhaled or ingested internally.   BronZEN provides all of the recommended protective wear when getting a spray tan: nose-plugs, lip protection, eye wear and under garments.

Is it safe for my skin?

DHA sunless tanning has been recommended by The Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatology, The American Cancer Society, The American Medical Society, and has been approved for cosmetic use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It has been used for over 30 years without any harmful effect. NOTE: IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN PRIOR TO YOUR TANNING SESSION.

On June 12, 2012 ABC News, along with several other news affiliates released scientific studies performed by the FDA on DHA (dihydroxyacetone), the active ingredient in all sunless tanning products and spray tan solutions.  This study reconfirmed the risks we were already aware of related to DHA ingested into the body and the potential harmful effects.  BronZEN continues to practice safe airbrush/spray tanning of only applying spray tanning solution to the skin, providing the needed ventilation and recommending our clients wear protective wear when receiving an airbrush tan.  We also will only provides spray tans while wearing a face masks to prevent inhalation.

How long will my tan last?

Depending on your activities and skin type, Austin airbrush tan services will give you a glow for 5-10 days. With follow-up applications, you can maintain your tan indefinitely. USE LOTION/MOISTURIZER ON YOUR SKIN DAILY TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR TAN, AS WELL AS HELP YOUR TAN FADE EVENLY. Tight clothing may cause the tan to naturally exfoliate if any material rubs against the skin: keep this in mind when dressing after application.

Do I have to be naked?

You do not have to be naked during your Austin spray tan appointment. It is your choice, and we are happy to accommodate what you feel comfortable with. Your airbrush tanning professional will be female, professional and experienced in providing a spray tan with a bathing suit or without. If you do not want tan lines than you will need to receive your airbrush tan without a bathing suit or lingerie. If you choose to wear your own underwear or a swim suit, please pick a dark colored suit or an old one.

Can I tan if I’m pregnant?

We have tanned many clients throughout their pregnancies and with the approval of their OBGYN. We believe, and it is generally accepted, that properly applied sunless tanning when done in an environment with adequate ventilation, is safe for mothers-to-be. If you choose to do a spray tan while pregnant, it’s YOU and YOUR PHYSICIAN’S decision.  Please note the FDA published risks related to inhaling DHA.

Does the spray tan smell? Will I stink?

Our airbrush tanning solution is water-soluble and only has a faint odor to it. However, it is so faint that it is not necessary to shower before going out. Most do not notice a spray tan smell at all. In addition, there is an added fragrance to neutralize the slight odor. After showering for the first-time, the solution tint washes away to reveal an odorless, flawless tan!
